Definition - What does Bharata mean?
Bharata, after whom India was once named, was the son of Dushyanta, the king of Puru and Sakuntala, who was brought up by the sage, Kanwa. Bharata is most remembered for his democratic rule. The ruler was so people-oriented that he chose Bhumanyu, the son of Bharadvaj, over his own sons to succeed him to the throne. Legends claim that Bhumanyu was the son of Bharata himself, while according to other myths, Bhumanyu was born through the grace of the sage, Bharadvaj.

Bharata crowned Bhumanyu as ruler, who was then succeeded by his son, Suhotra. It was Suhotra's son, Hastee, who founded the kingdom of Hastinapur, the land that is the center of the epic, "Mahabharata."
King Bharata made a clear statement with his actions about karma and the results of karma. Karma, which refers to actions or deeds, will be the deciding factor of one's fate. The act of Bharata in choosing Bhumanyu as his successor highlights the fact that karma plays a decisive role in one's life and not one's supposed right by birth.
It was Bharata's choice that created the setting for the "Mahabharata." The name of this epic can be translated as "the great Bharata" or "the great descendants of King Bharata."
