Definition - What does Bikram Choudhury mean?

Born in 1944 in Calcutta, Bikram Choudhury is an Indian yogi and founder of Bikram yoga. He moved to the United States in the early 1970s where he set up his first yoga studio. His structured hot yoga practice became very popular in the West and has since spurred several similar styles of yoga.

Choudhury began studying yoga as a child under the direction of Bishnu Ghosh. As a teen, he won the National India Yoga Championship four years in a row. As an adult, he founded his trademarked type of yoga and the Yoga College of India™.

Bikram yoga is an intense practice in rooms heated to 104 degrees Fahrenheit with a humidity of 40 percent and follows a set sequence of 26 endurance-focused poses. Classes, which last 90 minutes, begin with pranayama breathing exercises and end with an advanced breathing technique called kapalabhati.
