Golden Milk

Definition - What does Golden Milk mean?

Golden milk is a warm beverage made from milk and turmeric with various spices added for taste or medicinal purposes. In the ancient traditional Indian system of medicine known as Ayurveda, golden milk is used as a healing elixir.

Golden milk gets its name from the color of the spice, turmeric, and it gets its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties from that spice as well. It is also sometimes called turmeric tea and is known in India by the Hindi name haldi ka doodh.

Yogapedia explains Golden Milk

Ayurveda medicine, which is closely related to yoga, attempts to balance the three doshas (the bio-energies of the body) to promote healing and to maintain health. Turmeric -- a pungent, bitter and astringent herb -- is believed to balance all three doshas.

Because of the turmeric, golden milk is used to treat headaches, congestion, respiratory illness, menstrual cramps and sore throats. Additional ingredients in golden milk can increase its healing properties and help with digestibility. Common spices often added to golden milk include cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon, black pepper and ginger.
