Yogapedia explains Om Tara Tu Tara Tu Ray Swaha

Green Tara — to whom the mantra is devoted — is generally depicted as a deeply compassionate being, always ready to give comfort and provide protection from physical, mental and spiritual suffering. The first Dalai Lama said that Green Tara can be called upon to save individuals from the eight dangers, each of which symbolize a human challenge. These are:

  1. Lions, which symbolize pride;
  2. Wild elephants, which represent delusion or ignorance;
  3. Forest fires, which represent hatred;
  4. Snakes, which symbolize jealousy;
  5. Robbers, which represent false or fanatical views;
  6. Prisons, which symbolize greed;
  7. Floods, which represent attachment; and
  8. Demons, which symbolize the doubts that arise from delusion.

The Dalai Lama was teaching that the mantra is to be used not only for help in solving problems or asking for healing, but also for the deeper purpose of finding liberation from the delusions and negative experiences that prevent enlightenment.
