Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (also known as Yogacharya Sri K. Pattabhi Jois) was an Indian professor and yoga teacher. Jois helped to develop Ashtanga yoga, a style of vinyasa yoga based on specific sequences that originated from Hatha yoga.

Out of his home in Mysore, India, Jois began the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in 1948. Often, Ashtanga yoga sequences are taught in what is called the Mysore style, referring to this location.

Born in 1915 into a Brahmin family, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois showed an early interest in Sanskrit and Hindu rituals through the teachings of his father, who was an Indian priest and astrologer. He was the only individual in his family that showed an interest in practicing the yoga asanas, and eventually left home at age 15 to study Sanskrit and yoga. Jois studied under Krishnamacharya from 1927 to 1953 and also assisted Krishnamacharya with teaching yoga.

At age 18, Jois was married to Savitramma (also known as Amma) and had three children. Jois taught yoga at the Sanskrit College of Maharaja and also served as an honorary professor of yoga at the Government College of Indian Medicine. His wife and three children, Saraswati, Manju and Ramesh, also went on to teach yoga around the world.
